Aussie professional tennis player Destanee Aiava has announced her decision to retire at the end of the 2026 season. At 25 years old, she will celebrate her 26th birthday on May 10. In a lengthy Instagram post, Aiava expressed her gradual loss of joy in playing, reflecting on the heavy burden of expectations and the struggle to rebuild her identity outside of tennis. “Sometimes I continued to play out of obligation to those who supported me, and at other times, out of fear of starting over,” she shared.
Ranked 258th in the world, she is not leaving quietly; rather, she boldly criticizes the “toxic culture” that she believes plagues her sport. “Beneath the white uniforms and traditions lies a culture that is racist, misogynistic, homophobic, and hostile to anyone who doesn’t fit the mold,” Aiava stated. Of Samoan descent, she reported enduring discrimination and hurtful remarks throughout her career.
This stance resonates with a broader unease in global tennis. Governing bodies like the ITF and WTA have already acknowledged the extent of online abuse that female players face. In 2024, nearly 8,000 abusive or threatening messages were reported against 458 players, often linked to sports betting.
